Gold arena questions

I was wondering what factors into how the game decides too pair you up in the gold battle arena, because as you can see, the stats I currently have on my character are very abnormal thanks to my awesome inferno helm. So if match-ups are decided by the highest stat you have, I have no hope of winning. If it's based on level, I should be a bit better off
