Your new gear probably doesn't have vitality bonuses.

The stones are used whenever you get to the max level of that weapon. I believe it goes: Lvl 20 for Normal Lvl 40 for Magic Lvl 60 for Rare Lvl 80 for Epic Lvl 100 for Legendary Lvl 120 for Unique Hope this helps
